Jacmel, Southeast Department, Haiti, the Caribbean

Jacmel is the capital of the Southeast province. Considered the cultural capital of Haiti with its vibrant art scene, it is a quiet and charming city situated on Horseshoe Bay.  Its population is estimated at 40,000.

The city has not changed much since the late nineteenth century when it was home to wealthy coffee merchants living in gracious mansions whose style later influenced much of New Orleans.

Today, many of these homes are now artisan shops that sell vibrant handicrafts, papier-mâché, masks, and carved-wood animal figures.

Jacmel is a popular tourist destination in Haiti due to its relative tranquility and distance from recent political turmoil in the capital. Its world's renowned carnival attracts many visitors each year.
